Qlicksmart Co-Founder Presents at World Patient Safety Day!
This September, the World Health Organisation (WHO) launched the first-ever International Patient Safety Day. Qlicksmart’s Co-Founder Dr. Michael Sinnott had the privilege of presenting at the Malaysian World Patient Safety Day event, hosted by the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health’s (MSQH).
What is Patient Safety Day About?
World Patient Safety Day aims to highlight the importance of safety in healthcare for patients, and to encourage health workers, patients, policymakers, researchers, academics, professional networks, and the healthcare industry to speak up for patient safety. The WHO estimates that greater patient involvement in safety can reduce the burden of harm by 15%.
Staff and Patient Safety with Dr. Sinnott
In his presentation, Dr Sinnott focused on the relationship between staff and patient safety. Research from the past 2 decades has shown that an increased focus on staff safety had a positive effect on patient outcomes. Dr Sinnott presented the theory behind safety culture, and how to translate safety culture ideas into clinical practice. The implementation of seat belts was used as an example of a successful safety intervention.
The presentation went on to cover the history of staff safety and patient Safety. Dr Sinnott described the historical changes in mindset towards safety – improvements are being made, but we have a long way to go.
He also addressed concerns such as “why do we ignore staff safety” and “the real costs of sharps injuries.”
